Enter the VIN of a Vespa scooter to read what the number says.
Enter the 17-character VIN of a Vespa and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data covers 104 Vespa scooter models from 1963 to the present, from the Primavera 50 and Sprint 50 up to the GTS 310 and GTV 310 Officina 8, with engines between 49 and 310 cc. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft entries or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show them. That information comes from a vehicle history report, which you can order separately for the scooter you are looking at.

A modern VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three, the WMI, identify the manufacturer and the country. Characters 4 to 8 describe the machine itself, but each maker codes them in its own way, so they cannot be read the same way on every brand. Character 9 is a check digit, required in North America. Character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the assembly plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. This is how the decoder tells a recent Primavera 125 or GTS 300 from an older machine.
On a scooter the VIN is usually stamped into the frame, often near the steering head, and repeated on a plate or sticker. It is also printed in the registration papers, which is the easiest place to copy it from. 17-character VINs apply to vehicles built since 1981. Our Vespa data goes back to 1963, so an older machine may carry a shorter frame number that a VIN decoder cannot read.
The decoder reads the number. A history report looks for the records tied to it.
Vespa history reportLook at the frame first, often near the steering head, where the number is usually stamped. It is also on a plate or sticker and in the registration papers.
Characters 1 to 3 are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. Characters 4 to 8 describe the machine, and the maker decides how they are coded.
The model year is the 10th character. Enter all 17 characters and the decoder reads it for you. Our Vespa data runs from 1963 to the present, but machines built before 1981 may have a shorter frame number that cannot be decoded.
It reads only the VIN, so it gives the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft entries and owners are not stored in the VIN.
Compare the VIN on the frame with the number in the registration papers and look for signs that the stamping has been altered. Make sure the model name in the papers, for example GTS 300 or GTS 310, and the engine size match the scooter in front of you.
