Enter the VIN of a Triumph motorcycle to read what the number says.
Enter the 17-character VIN of a Triumph motorcycle and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data covers 269 Triumph models from 1937 to the present, from the Bonneville T100 and Scrambler 1200 to the Tiger 900 Alpine and Rocket 3 R. Engine sizes in the data run from 50 to 2458 cc, and the highest power listed is 182 hp.
The decoder reads only the VIN, so it says nothing about accidents, mileage, theft entries or previous owners. That information comes from a vehicle history report, which is a separate paid service.

A VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are not used. The first three identify the manufacturer and the country, characters 4 to 8 describe the machine in a code each maker sets for itself, and character 9 is a check digit that North America requires. Character 10 gives the model year, which is useful across a range that stretches from 1937 to the present, and character 11 points to the assembly plant. Characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. A Bonneville Bobber and a Tiger Sport 660 each carry their own number in that last block.
On a motorcycle the VIN is usually stamped into the frame, often near the steering head, and repeated on a plate or sticker. You will also find it in the registration papers. Seventeen-character VINs apply to vehicles built since 1981, so a classic from the earlier part of Triumph's 1937 onward range can carry a shorter frame number that a VIN decoder cannot read.
The decoder reads the number. A history report looks for the records tied to it.

The first three characters identify the manufacturer and the country where the machine was built. The decoder turns them into plain text, so you do not need to look up the code yourself.
The tenth character of the VIN stands for the model year, and the decoder translates it for you. This works for 17-character VINs, which apply to vehicles built since 1981.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft entries or owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also cannot read the shorter frame numbers found on some older machines.
Compare the VIN on the frame with the one in the registration papers, and check that the stamped number looks clean and untouched. Ask for service records, and make sure the model name and engine size in the papers match the machine in front of you.
