This free decoder reads the 17-character VIN of a Ducati motorcycle and shows the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. No registration is needed. Our catalogue lists 410 Ducati models from 1972 to the present, including the DesertX, Monster, Multistrada V4 and Panigale V4 / V4S, with engine sizes from 78 to 1285 cc.

The VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft entries or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show them. That information comes from a vehicle history report, which is a separate paid service.

What the decoder shows for a Ducati

  • The manufacturer and the country of manufacture, from the first three characters
  • The model year, from the 10th character
  • The assembly plant code and the serial number
  • Whether the check digit fits (a clear sign of a mistyped or altered number in North America)

How to read the VIN of a Ducati motorcycle

A modern VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters identify the manufacturer and the country, and characters 4 to 8 describe the machine. Each maker codes those five in its own way, which is why the decoder only reports the manufacturer, model year and country. Character 9 is a check digit that North American vehicles must carry. Character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the assembly plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The 10th character is how you tell a recent Panigale V2 or Hypermotard 950 from an older machine.

On a motorcycle the VIN is usually stamped into the frame, often near the steering head. It is also printed on a plate or sticker and written in the registration papers. Our Ducati data starts in 1972, but 17-character VINs only apply to vehicles built since 1981. A Ducati from the 1970s may therefore carry a shorter frame number that a VIN decoder cannot read.

Questions and answers

Where do I find the VIN on a Ducati?

Look at the frame, often near the steering head, where the VIN is usually stamped. It may also appear on a plate or sticker. The registration papers show it too, so you can compare all three.

What do the first characters of a Ducati VIN mean?

The first three characters, called the WMI, identify the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. Characters 4 to 8 describe the machine, but each maker codes them differently.

How do I find the model year of a Ducati from its VIN?

The 10th character stands for the model year. Enter the full 17 characters and the decoder shows the year for you. Our catalogue covers Ducati models from 1972 to the present.

What can the Ducati VIN decoder not tell me?

It shows no accidents, mileage, theft entries or owners, because the VIN does not contain them. It also cannot read the shorter frame numbers found on some machines built before 1981.

What should I check before buying a used Ducati?

Compare the VIN on the frame, on the plate and in the registration papers, and make sure they match and the frame stamping looks untouched. Then check that the decoded model year fits the model and the engine size the seller claims.
