Enter the 17-character VIN of a KTM motorcycle and the decoder tells you the manufacturer, the model year and the country where the machine was built. It is free and needs no registration. Our KTM data covers 258 models from 1982 to the present, from the 49 cc end of the range up to 1350 cc, and some of those models are still being built.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself, so it says nothing about accidents, mileage, theft entries or previous owners. That information comes from a vehicle history report, which is a separate, paid service.

A VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters identify the manufacturer and the country, and characters 4 to 8 describe the machine in a code that each maker defines for itself. Character 9 is a check digit, which is required in North America. The tenth character gives the model year, the eleventh the assembly plant, and the last six are the serial number. That is how the decoder can place a KTM anywhere in the 1982 to present range, whether it is a 450 SMR, a 690 Enduro R or a newer 1390 Super Duke RR.
On a motorcycle the VIN is usually stamped into the frame, often near the steering head, and it is also printed on a plate or sticker. You will find it in the registration papers too. Machines built before the 17-character standard, which applies to vehicles built since 1981, can carry a shorter frame number, and a VIN decoder cannot read those. This can matter for early enduro or motocross bikes in the 1980s part of our data.
The decoder reads the number. A history report looks for the records tied to it.

The first three characters identify the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. Characters 4 to 8 describe the machine, but each maker codes them in its own way.
The tenth character of a 17-character VIN stands for the model year. The decoder translates it for you, for example for a 790 Duke or a 390 Adventure R.
It reads only the VIN, so you get the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft entries and owners are not stored in the VIN.
Compare the VIN stamped in the frame with the number on the plate and in the registration papers, and make sure they match. Check that the stamping looks clean and untouched, and ask the seller for service records, especially on hard-used enduro or motocross machines.
