Enter the 17-character VIN of a Royal Enfield motorcycle and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data covers 67 Royal Enfield models from 1962 to the present, some of them still built, from the Bullet 350 and Bullet 500 to the Himalayan 450 and Guerrilla 450. The decoder is free and needs no registration.

It reads only the VIN, so it says nothing about accidents, mileage, theft entries or previous owners. That information comes from a vehicle history report, a paid service separate from this decoder.

What the decoder shows for a Royal Enfield

  • The manufacturer and the country of manufacture, from the first three characters
  • The model year, from the 10th character
  • The assembly plant code and the serial number
  • Whether the check digit fits (a clear sign of a mistyped or altered number in North America)

How to read the VIN of a Royal Enfield motorcycle

A VIN has 17 characters and never uses the letters I, O or Q. The first three identify the manufacturer and the country, positions 4 to 8 describe the machine, and position 9 is a check digit, which is required in North America. Position 10 gives the model year, position 11 the assembly plant, and positions 12 to 17 are the serial number. Each maker codes positions 4 to 8 in its own way, so those characters do not turn into a model name or engine size in this decoder.

On a motorcycle the VIN is usually stamped into the frame, often near the steering head, and it is also printed on a plate or sticker and in the registration papers. 17-character VINs apply to vehicles built since 1981. Our Royal Enfield data goes back to 1962, so an older machine may carry a shorter frame number that a VIN decoder cannot read. A Classic 350, Hunter 350, Himalayan 450 or Interceptor 650 from recent years is a different case, and its VIN follows the 17-character layout.

Questions and answers

Where do I find the VIN on a Royal Enfield?

On a motorcycle the VIN is usually stamped into the frame, often near the steering head. You can also find it on a plate or sticker and in the registration papers.

What do the first characters of the VIN mean?

Characters 1 to 3 identify the manufacturer and the country where the machine was built. The decoder uses them to show who made the motorcycle and in which country.

How do I find the model year of my Royal Enfield?

The model year is the 10th character of the VIN, and the decoder translates it for you. Our data runs from 1962 to the present, but only machines built since 1981 carry a 17-character VIN that can be decoded.

What can the decoder not show me?

The VIN contains no accidents, mileage, theft entries or owners, so the decoder cannot show them. It also does not name the exact model, for example whether a bike is a Meteor 350 or a Super Meteor 650.

What should I check before buying a used Royal Enfield?

Compare the VIN on the frame with the plate and the registration papers, and look for stamping that seems scratched or reworked. Then check that the decoded model year and country match what the seller tells you. On a machine built before 1981, expect a shorter frame number instead of a 17-character VIN.
