Enter the VIN of a Norton motorcycle to read what the number says.
Enter the 17-character VIN of a Norton motorcycle and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our Norton data covers 50 models from 1984 to the present, from the Dominator and Superlight to the Commando 961 Sport, Atlas and V4 SV, with engine sizes from 200 to 1479 cc. The highest power listed is 235 hp.
The VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft entries or previous owners. That information comes from a vehicle history report, which is separate from this free decoder.

A VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three identify the manufacturer and the country, which is what tells the decoder that a machine is a Norton. Characters 4 to 8 describe the motorcycle itself, but each maker codes them in its own way, so they are not the same across brands. Character 9 is a check digit, required in North America. Character 10 is the model year, character 11 the assembly plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. That tenth character is what separates, for example, an early Commando 961 from a later Commando 961 Sport MKII.
On a motorcycle the VIN is usually stamped into the frame, often near the steering head, and repeated on a plate or sticker. It is also printed in the registration papers, so you can compare all three. Our Norton data starts at model year 1984, and 17-character VINs apply to vehicles built since 1981, so a machine from our range should carry one. Older frame numbers can be shorter, and a decoder cannot read those.
The decoder reads the number. A history report looks for the records tied to it.

The first three characters identify the manufacturer and the country where it was built. Characters 4 to 8 then describe the machine, and each maker codes that part differently.
The model year is the 10th character of the VIN, and the decoder translates it for you. Our Norton data runs from 1984 to the present, since some models are still built.
It reads only the VIN, so it shows the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft entries and owners are not stored in the VIN.
Compare the VIN on the frame, on the plate and in the registration papers, and make sure they match and look untouched. Then check that the model year and engine size fit the model being sold, whether it is a Commando 961, an Atlas or a V4.
