Enter the VIN of a Indian motorcycle to read what the number says.
Enter the 17-character VIN of an Indian motorcycle and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. It is free and needs no registration. Our catalogue lists 82 Indian models from 1993 to the present, from the Scout Bobber and Chief Vintage to the Roadmaster Elite and FTR1200, so most machines you come across should fit that range.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself. Accidents, mileage, theft entries and previous owners are not stored in it, and you can find them in a vehicle history report.

A VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used, so they cannot be mistaken for 1 and 0. The first three characters identify the manufacturer and the country. Characters 4 to 8 describe the machine, and each maker codes them in its own way. Character 9 is a check digit, required in North America. Character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the assembly plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. For an Indian, the model year is the part that tells a Chief Bobber Dark Horse from an older Scout 1000 or Chief 1900, since our data runs from 1993 to the present.
On a motorcycle the VIN is usually stamped into the frame, often near the steering head, and repeated on a plate or sticker. It also appears in the registration papers, so compare all three. Check that the number on the frame matches the paperwork. Machines built before 1981 can carry shorter frame numbers, which a VIN decoder cannot read. Indian models in our data range from the Scout Sixty Classic to the Super Chief Dark Horse, with engines from 133 to 1890 cc.
The decoder reads the number. A history report looks for the records tied to it.

The first three characters identify the manufacturer and the country where the motorcycle was built. The decoder reads them and shows you the result, so you do not have to look the code up yourself.
The tenth character of the VIN encodes the model year, and the decoder translates it for you. Our catalogue covers Indian models from 1993 to the present, and some of them are still built.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft entries or the number of owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also cannot read the shorter frame numbers found on machines built before 1981.
Compare the VIN on the frame with the number in the registration papers and make sure the characters match exactly. Then use the decoder to confirm that the model year and country fit what the seller tells you.
