Enter the VIN of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle you are thinking of buying and check what its records say.
Our Harley-Davidson data covers 317 models from 1957 to the present, so a used bike can be anything from a Super Glide or a Dyna Low Rider to a recent Pan America or Sportster S. That spread makes it hard to judge a single machine by its looks, and a clean tank and fresh chrome say little about what happened in earlier years. A history check gives you records to set against what the seller tells you.
The VIN is a 17-character code on bikes built since 1981, and the Harley-Davidson VIN decoder shows what is encoded in the number itself, such as the maker, the model year and the plant. Accidents, mileage readings, theft entries and previous owners are not in the code. They come from a vehicle history report, where records are available, and they still tell you nothing about the bike's technical condition today.
Records are shown where available. Coverage may vary by country and vehicle.
The first problem is the range itself. Our data lists custom and cruiser models (40 of them), touring (10), sport (5) and classic (2), with engine sizes from 101 to 2147 cc and a highest power of 153 hp. A Softail Fat Boy, a Road King, a Street Glide Ultra and a Nightster can sit side by side in the classifieds at very different ages and prices. What counts as a fair deal for one says little about another, so check the specific bike, not the model name.
The second problem is what you cannot see. A test ride and a handful of photos reveal little about past damage or real mileage, and a repaired crash can hide behind good paint. The seller's story and the papers may also differ from the records. Mileage is a good example: a reading in the advert, one in the service book and one in a database should tell the same story, and if they do not, you want to know before you travel or pay a deposit.
Age matters too. Our data starts in 1957, and machines built before 1981 can carry shorter frame numbers that a decoder cannot read. For those, the paperwork and a close look at the stamped number matter even more. A bike with a 17-character VIN can be checked against records, but a report covers records only. It does not replace an inspection by a mechanic, who can judge frame, brakes, tyres and engine in person.
Copy it from the advert, the papers or the frame itself.
You continue on the report page and choose how to pay.
Compare them with the seller's account and decide with the facts in front of you.
The VIN decoder reads the manufacturer code, model year and country of manufacture of a Harley-Davidson. It does not show the history of the bike.

Depending on the vehicle and country, it can list damage records, mileage readings, theft entries, ownership changes and technical data. Records are shown where available, and coverage may vary by country and by vehicle.
No. The VIN identifies the maker, model year, plant and serial number, and its ninth character is a check digit, but it does not contain accidents, mileage, theft entries or owners. Those come from a history report, and neither of them tells you the bike's current mechanical condition.
It makes sense to. A check before a visit or a deposit costs little next to a wrong purchase, and it lets you ask about any gaps or differences while you can still walk away. You need the VIN from the advert or the seller, and on a motorcycle it is usually stamped into the frame near the steering head.
Missing records are not proof of a problem, because coverage varies by country and vehicle. Ask the seller for service invoices and registration papers, compare them with the bike, and have a mechanic inspect it before you decide.
Motorcycles of one brand are often built and sold in many countries, so the history can span borders and some records may sit in another country. Check that the VIN on the frame, the plate and the registration papers all match, and ask where the bike was first registered.
