Enter the VIN of the Benelli motorcycle you are thinking of buying and check what its records say.
Our data on Benelli covers 93 models, with model years from 1968 to the present, engines from 49 to 1131 cc and power up to 163 hp. A used Benelli can therefore be a small scooter or a large naked bike, and the two have little in common when it comes to age, price or the way they were ridden. Before you travel to see one, it helps to know what is on record about that particular frame.
A VIN-based check settles whether the number is plausible and what records exist under it, such as damage, mileage readings, theft entries and ownership changes, where available. The Benelli VIN decoder shows what is encoded in the number itself, but accidents, mileage and owners are not part of the VIN and only a history report can show them. Neither replaces a look at the bike by a mechanic.
Records are shown where available. Coverage may vary by country and vehicle.
The first problem is the spread of the range. A Leoncino 125, a TRK 502, a Tornado Tre 899 and a TnT 1130 sit in very different parts of the market, and so do the bikes behind them: different ages, different asking prices, different kinds of owners. Our data lists 15 naked bikes, 12 scooters, 4 enduro / offroad machines and 3 allround models, so a seller's advert can describe almost anything. A history check gives you something to compare the advert with.
The second problem is what you cannot see. Damage and mileage are hard to judge from a short test ride and a handful of photos, and a clean tank or fresh fairings can hide a repaired crash. The seller's account may be honest and still differ from the records, and the paperwork can differ too. A report that shows a damage entry, a mileage reading that does not fit the odometer, or a theft entry gives you a concrete question to ask before any money changes hands.
Age matters as well. The 17-character VIN applies to vehicles built since 1981, while a machine from the earlier part of the 1968 to present range may carry a shorter frame number that a decoder cannot read. On a newer bike, compare the VIN stamped into the frame, often near the steering head, with the plate or sticker and with the registration papers. A report covers records, not the current technical condition, so brakes, chain, suspension and engine still need a mechanic's eye.
Copy it from the advert, the papers or the frame itself.

The VIN decoder reads the manufacturer code, model year and country of manufacture of a Benelli. It does not show the history of the bike.
Benelli VIN decoderLooking at a specific Benelli model? Each page below explains how its VIN is read.
Depending on what is available for the vehicle, it can show damage records, mileage readings, theft entries, ownership changes and technical data. Coverage may vary by country and by vehicle, so a missing entry is not proof that nothing happened.
No. The VIN tells you who made the machine, describes it in the maker's own coding, and gives the model year and a serial number. It does not contain accidents, mileage, theft entries or owners, which come from the history report.
It is a sensible order. Ask the seller for the VIN first, and run the check before you travel or leave a deposit, because a check costs little next to a wrong purchase. If the records do not match the seller's story, you can raise it before you spend a day on the trip.
Records are shown where available, so gaps can happen, especially with older bikes or ones that changed countries. Treat a gap as an open question: ask the seller for service invoices and previous registration papers, and have a mechanic inspect the bike more closely.
Motorcycles of one brand are often built and sold in many countries, so the history can span borders and coverage may differ from one country to the next. Check that the VIN on the frame, the plate and the papers all match, and ask for documents from the earlier country of registration.
