Enter the 17-character VIN of a Polaris ATV and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. It is free and needs no registration. Our Polaris data covers 20 ATV models with model years from 2009 to 2024, from small machines such as the Outlaw 50, Outlaw 70 and Sportsman 90 up to the Sportsman 1000 and Scrambler 1000. Engine sizes in the data run from 49 to 952 cc, and the highest power listed is 89 hp.

The VIN does not record accidents, mileage, theft entries or previous owners. That information comes from a vehicle history report, which you can order separately for the machine you are looking at.

What the decoder shows for a Polaris

  • The manufacturer and the country of manufacture, from the first three characters
  • The model year, from the 10th character
  • The assembly plant code and the serial number
  • Whether the check digit fits (a clear sign of a mistyped or altered number in North America)

How to read the VIN of a Polaris ATV

A VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters identify the manufacturer and the country where it was built. Characters 4 to 8 describe the machine, and each maker codes them in its own way, so they cannot be read the same way for every brand. Character 9 is the check digit, which is required in North America. Character 10 is the model year, so it is the one to look at if you want to know whether a Sportsman 450 or an Outlaw 110 is from 2009, 2024 or a year in between.

Character 11 marks the assembly plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number of that individual machine. On an ATV the VIN is usually stamped into the frame and also printed on a plate or sticker, and it appears in the registration papers. Check that the number on the frame matches the papers. Machines built before 1981 can carry shorter frame numbers, which a VIN decoder cannot read.

Questions and answers

Where do I find the VIN on a Polaris ATV?

Look for it stamped into the frame and printed on a plate or sticker on the machine. It is also written in the registration papers, so you can compare the two.

What do the first characters of the VIN mean?

The first three characters identify the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. The decoder uses them to show who built the machine and where.

How do I find the model year of my Polaris?

The model year is coded in the 10th character of the VIN, and the decoder reads it for you. Our Polaris data covers model years 2009 to 2024.

What can the decoder not show me?

It reads only the VIN itself, so it cannot show accidents, mileage, theft entries or owners. Those details are not stored in the number.

What should I check before buying a used Polaris ATV?

Make sure the VIN on the frame matches the plate and the registration papers, and that it has 17 characters if the machine is newer than 1981. Then compare the model year the decoder gives with what the seller says, for example for a Sportsman 500 or a Scrambler 850.
