Enter the 17-character VIN of a Can-Am and the decoder tells you who built the machine, which model year it belongs to and in which country it was made. Our data lists 20 Can-Am models, from Outlander 1000, Outlander 500 and Outlander 800 to Ryker 600, Ryker 900, DS 70 and Renegade 1000, with model years from 2007 to 2025. It is free and needs no registration.

A VIN does not hold accidents, mileage, theft entries or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show them. That information comes from a vehicle history report, which is a separate step from the free decode.

What the decoder shows for a Can-Am

  • The manufacturer and the country of manufacture, from the first three characters
  • The model year, from the 10th character
  • The assembly plant code and the serial number
  • Whether the check digit fits (a clear sign of a mistyped or altered number in North America)

How the VIN of a Can-Am ATV is read

The first three characters identify the manufacturer and the country where the vehicle was built. Characters 4 to 8 describe the machine itself, but each maker codes them in its own way, so they do not translate the same across brands. Character 9 is a check digit, required in North America. Character 10 gives the model year, which for Can-Am in our data runs from 2007 to 2025. Character 11 marks the assembly plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN.

On an ATV the VIN is usually stamped into the frame and repeated on a plate or sticker, and it also appears in the registration papers. Look at the frame first, and check that the number matches the papers. This applies to a DS 90 as much as to an Outlander 1000 or a Renegade 800. A machine built before 1981, or one with a shorter frame number, cannot be read by a VIN decoder, because the 17-character format applies to vehicles built since 1981.

Questions and answers

Where do I find the VIN on a Can-Am ATV?

It is usually stamped into the frame and also printed on a plate or sticker. You will find it in the registration papers too. If the frame number and the papers do not match, ask the seller why.

What do the first characters of a Can-Am VIN mean?

Characters 1 to 3 identify the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. Characters 4 to 8 describe the machine, and the maker decides how they are coded.

How do I see the model year of a Can-Am from its VIN?

The model year is encoded in character 10. The decoder reads it for you, and our Can-Am data covers model years 2007 to 2025.

What can the decoder not show me?

It reads only the VIN itself, so it gives the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft entries and owners are not stored in the VIN.

What should I check before buying a used Can-Am?

Compare the VIN on the frame with the plate and the registration papers, and check that the model year fits the model, for example an Outlander 450 or a DS 250. Ask for service records and look the machine over in person.
