Enter the 17-character VIN of a ZX and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from the code itself. Our data for ZX covers two models, GrandTiger and Landmark, both SUVs, with model years from 2006 to 2011. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
A VIN does not record accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

Every VIN built since 1981 has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to ZX, so we cannot list a code to look for here. Our list is not complete, and that says nothing about any particular VIN.
The model year sits at position 10. For a ZX from our 2006 to 2011 range, you would expect 6 for 2006, 7 for 2007, 8 for 2008, 9 for 2009, A for 2010 and B for 2011. Positions 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, position 9 is the check digit, position 11 is the plant and positions 12 to 17 are the serial number. The check digit is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

The VIN is usually printed on a plate or sticker on the car and written in the registration papers. Look at the dashboard near the windscreen and at the door frame on the driver's side. Copy all 17 characters exactly as shown.
The first three characters are the WMI, which names the manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes mapped to ZX yet, so we cannot give you a code to compare. A VIN that starts differently is not necessarily a problem, because our list is incomplete.
Look at the 10th character. In the years our ZX data covers, 6 means 2006, 7 means 2007, 8 means 2008, 9 means 2009, A means 2010 and B means 2011.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. We also have no power figures for ZX in our data.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the papers, and that the model year from the decoder fits the advert. Check that the body is an SUV, as in our data for GrandTiger and Landmark. Then inspect the car in person and ask the seller for service records.
