Enter a 17-character VIN and this page decodes it for free, with no registration. It reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from the characters themselves. For Zhidou, our data covers three models, D1, D2 and D3, with model years from 2014 to 2018 and the hatchback body style.
A VIN holds no accident record, mileage, theft status or owner details. If you need those, they come from a paid vehicle history report, which is a separate step from the decoder.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used, so they cannot be mistaken for 1 and 0. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit, character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Zhidou, so there is no code or country we can point to for this brand. That is a limit of our list, which is not complete, and it says nothing about your VIN. Whatever the first three characters are, the other positions follow the same general rules.
The model year character is the easiest part to check. Within the 2014 to 2018 range of our Zhidou data, E means 2014, F means 2015, G means 2016, H means 2017 and J means 2018. So a VIN with H in position 10 points to model year 2017. Keep in mind that check digit rules differ: North America requires position 9 to be a check digit, while many European VINs fill it differently.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

The usual places are the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, a sticker on the door pillar and the vehicle registration document. Compare the number in at least two places and copy all 17 characters exactly.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes on file for Zhidou right now, so we cannot list any here. A VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem, because our list is incomplete.
Look at character 10. For the 2014 to 2018 years in our data, the letters are E for 2014, F for 2015, G for 2016, H for 2017 and J for 2018. The decoder does this for you when you enter the full VIN.
It reads only the VIN itself, so it cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. None of that is stored in the 17 characters.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the registration papers, and check that the model year the decoder shows fits the seller's description. Then ask for service records and look over the hatchback body in person.
