Enter a 17-character VIN and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from it. Our Zenvo data covers six models, Aurora, ST1, TS1, TSR, TSR-GT and TSR-S, with version data from 2009 to the present, since some models are still being built. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
A VIN does not carry a car's past, so accidents, mileage, theft records and previous owners will not appear here. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We do not currently have a WMI code mapped to Zenvo, so there is no code list to show here. That is a limit of our data and says nothing about any particular VIN.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North America requires it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
The model year character is the easiest part to check by eye. For a Zenvo, a 9 in position 10 stands for 2009, the first year in our version data, and an A stands for 2010. The letters continue in order from there, so a T means 2026.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |

Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

It is normally printed on the registration papers and also marked on the car itself, often at the base of the windscreen or on a plate in the door area. Compare the two, since they should show the same 17 characters.
The first three characters are the WMI, which names the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes mapped to Zenvo yet, so we cannot list any. A VIN that begins with other characters is not made invalid by that.
Look at the 10th character. A 9 means 2009, A means 2010, and later years follow the letters in sequence, for example R for 2024 and S for 2025. Our Zenvo version data runs from 2009 to the present.
It reads only the VIN, so it gives the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft and owners are not stored in the VIN at all.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the VIN on the paperwork, character for character. Ask to see service records and ownership documents, and decode the VIN to confirm that the model year matches what the seller says.
