Enter a 17-character VIN and the VinFast decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from the code. Our VinFast data covers 11 models, among them Fadil, LUX A, LUX SA, President, VF 3, VF 5, VF 6, VF 7, VF 8, VF 9 and VF e34, with model years from 2019 to the present. The body styles in that data are Hatchback, Sedan and SUV, and the highest power listed is 228 hp.
The decoder reads the VIN only, so it cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder itself is free and needs no registration.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. For VinFast we currently have no WMI codes mapped, so we cannot list any here. That is a limit of our list, not a comment on your VIN, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not wrong because of it.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must carry a real check digit, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 is the model year. For a VinFast, an M means 2021, a P means 2023 and an R means 2024. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the registration document first, since the VIN is printed there. On the vehicle it is often visible at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side or on a label at the door pillar.
The first three characters are the WMI, which points to the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. We have no WMI codes mapped to VinFast at the moment, so the decoder may not name a country for every VIN. That does not mean anything is wrong with the number.
Read the 10th character. For example, K stands for 2019, L for 2020, N for 2022, S for 2025 and T for 2026. Our version data for the brand starts in 2019.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not tell you the condition of a particular car.
Compare the VIN in the documents with the one on the vehicle, and check that the decoded model year matches the advertised one. Then ask for the service and ownership records, and have the car inspected in person.
