What is a Vespa VIN decoder?

This page decodes the 17-character VIN of a Vespa. Enter the number and you get the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture, as far as the VIN itself carries them. Our data for the brand lists two models, Porter and Vespacar, with version data for model years 1971 to 2000 and power figures up to 65 hp.

The decoder reads nothing but the VIN, so it says nothing about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder itself is free and needs no registration.

What the Vespa decoder shows

  • The manufacturer and brand (Vespa)
  • The model year
  • The country of manufacture
  • The assembly plant, when it is coded
  • The vehicle type and body style, where the manufacturer encodes it
  • Engine and model details, where available
  • Whether the VIN structure and check digit are valid

How to read the VIN of a Vespa

A VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit, character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.

At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Vespa, so there is no code to quote here. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that begins with other characters is not a reason for concern. The decoder still reads the VIN and shows what it can.

The model year is the easiest part to check by hand. In the 17-character format, a 10th character of L means 1990 and a T means 1996, while Y stands for 2000. Our version data for Vespa runs from 1971 to 2000. The 17-character standard applies to vehicles built since 1981, so for the earliest years in that range the decoder may have nothing to read.

Learn more about VINs

A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Before you buy a used Vespa

  • Compare the VIN on the dashboard, the door frame and the documents. All three should match.
  • Look for signs of tampering around the VIN plate and the door frame sticker.
  • Ask for the service history and check it against the car.
  • Run a full history report to see recorded damage, mileage and theft records.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the VIN on a Vespa?

Start with the registration document, where the VIN is printed in full. On the vehicle it is usually on a plate or stamped into the frame, but the exact spot differs from one vehicle to another.

What do the first characters of a Vespa VIN mean?

The first three characters are the WMI, which points to the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. We have no WMI codes mapped to Vespa right now, and our list is incomplete, so a VIN with a different start is not wrong.

How do I find the model year from the VIN?

Look at the 10th character. A letter L means 1990, T means 1996 and Y means 2000, all within the 1971 to 2000 range of our Vespa version data. VINs of vehicles built before 1981 do not follow this 17-character system.

What can the Vespa VIN decoder not show?

It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or owners, because a VIN does not contain them. Body styles are also not available in our data for this brand.

What should I check before buying a used Vespa?

Compare the VIN on the papers with the one on the vehicle, and make sure it has 17 characters and no I, O or Q. Decode it here to see whether the model year matches what the seller says, and ask for documents that cover its past use.
