Enter a 17-character VIN and the UAZ decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from the code. Our data covers 12 UAZ models, among them 3151, 31512, 31514, 31519, 3153, 3159, 3160, 3162, 469, Hunter, Patriot and Pickup. The version data runs from 1972 to the present, since some of these models are still built. It includes the Wagon and Pickup body styles, with power up to 150 hp.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself, so it says nothing about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
A VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. For UAZ we currently have no WMI codes mapped, so there is no list of prefixes to show here. That reflects the limits of our data. It says nothing about any particular VIN.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must carry a valid check digit, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 is the model year. For example, K stands for 2019 and L for 2020, so a UAZ with L in that position is a 2020 model year. Character 11 is the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
The standard 17-character VIN applies to vehicles built since 1981. Our UAZ version data starts in 1972, so an early 469 or 3151 may carry a different kind of number, and the decoder may not be able to read it.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look first at the registration papers or the sales documents, then compare that number with the one on the vehicle itself. The exact position can differ between models such as the Hunter, the Patriot and the Pickup, so check the vehicle carefully and make sure both numbers match.
The first three characters are the WMI, which names the manufacturer and the country. We have no WMI codes mapped to UAZ at the moment, so the decoder may not recognise every prefix. A VIN that is not on our list is not wrong because of that.
Look at the 10th character. A letter such as J means 2018, K means 2019 and L means 2020, while digits cover 2001 to 2009. The same letter repeats every 30 years, so also use the model and body style to place the vehicle in the right period.
It cannot show accidents, mileage readings, theft records or the number of owners. A VIN does not contain any of that. It also cannot confirm the equipment or engine of a specific vehicle beyond what the code itself gives.
Make sure the VIN in the papers matches the one on the vehicle, and decode it to see if the model year fits the seller's description. Check which model and body style it is, Wagon or Pickup, and look at the condition in person. For vehicles built before 1981, expect that the number may not follow the 17-character format.
