Enter a 17-character VIN and the Trabant decoder reads what is encoded in it: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand covers 2 models, for example the 1.1 and the P 601, with model years from 1963 to 1991, body styles Convertible, Wagon and Sedan, and a highest power of 26 hp.
The decoder reads the VIN only, so it says nothing about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder itself is free and needs no registration.
A modern VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit, character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The check digit is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently.
At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Trabant, so there is no list of codes to show here and no country we can tie to the brand. A VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem because of that, since our list is simply not complete. For a Trabant VIN the manufacturer and country result may therefore be limited, but the model year can still be read from position 10.
The 17-character format applies to cars built since 1981. In our Trabant data that means the last model years, 1981 to 1991. A 10th character of B stands for 1981 and M for 1991, with letters in between such as H for 1987 and L for 1990. Our data starts in 1963, and the decoder only reads 17-character VINs.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.
Enter the 17-character VIN and see the factory basics in seconds.
Look at the vehicle registration papers and on the car itself. Compare both, because the number you type into the decoder should be the one that appears in each place.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and country. We do not currently have any WMI codes mapped to Trabant, so we cannot list any. A VIN with other starting characters is not wrong because of that.
Use the 10th character. For the years from 1981 on, B is 1981, F is 1985, K is 1989, L is 1990 and M is 1991. Our version data for the brand runs from 1963 to 1991, but 17-character VINs belong to cars built since 1981.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or owners, so the decoder cannot show them. It also does not tell you the condition of a particular car.
Make sure the VIN in the papers matches the one on the car, and that the model year from the 10th character fits the year given in the advert. Check that the body style, whether Convertible, Wagon or Sedan, matches the documents, and ask the seller for any records of past work.
