The Tonggong decoder reads the 17-character VIN and shows the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand is small: one model, the TG, with version data for the sedan body style and model years 1996 to 2006. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

Every VIN of a car built since 1981 has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. At the moment we have no WMI codes on record for Tonggong, so we cannot list any here or name a country. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not a reason for concern.
The model year is easier to pin down. It sits in position 10, and for the years in our Tonggong data the character runs like this: T for 1996, V for 1997, W for 1998, X for 1999 and Y for 2000. From 2001 to 2006 it is the digit 1 to 6, so a 10th character of 6 points to 2006, the last year in our data.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. It is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Position 11 marks the plant and positions 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the vehicle registration document first, then compare it with the number on the car itself. On many cars it is visible at the base of the windscreen or on a door pillar, but the exact spot can differ from car to car.
The first three characters are the WMI, the code for manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes on record for Tonggong, and our list is incomplete, so we do not judge a VIN by how it starts.
Check the 10th character of the VIN. Our version data covers 1996 to 2006, which means T, V, W, X or Y for 1996 to 2000, or a digit from 1 to 6 for 2001 to 2006.
It reads only the VIN itself, so it shows manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft and owners are not stored in the number.
Make sure the VIN on the documents matches the one on the car, that it has 17 characters and contains no I, O or Q. Then see whether the model year character fits the year the seller states, and ask for service records and proof of the mileage.
