Type or paste the 17-character VIN of a Tofas and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand covers 15 models, among them 131, Albea, Brava, Bravo, Doblo, Dogan, Kartal, Marea, Palio, Sahin, Serce, Siena, Tempra, Tipo and UNO, with model years from 1981 to 2006.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself, so it says nothing about a particular car's past: accidents, mileage, theft records and previous owners are not stored in those 17 characters. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder stays free and needs no registration.
The first three characters are the WMI, the world manufacturer identifier. The code we map to Tofas is NM4, and it belongs to Turkey. If a VIN starts with NM4, the decoder will name the manufacturer and the country of manufacture straight away. The list is not complete, so a VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem in itself. NM4 is simply the code we recognise for the brand.
Characters 4 to 8 form the descriptor section, where the maker encodes details of the vehicle. Our version data for the brand includes Wagon, Sedan and Hatchback bodies, with power figures up to 154 hp. Position 9 is the check digit. It is required in North America, while many European VINs fill it differently, so we do not treat it as a pass or fail test.
The tenth character is the model year. For the years in our Tofas data, B stands for 1981, T for 1996 and W for 1998. From 2001 the letters give way to digits, so 1 means 2001 and 6 means 2006. Character 11 marks the plant and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number of the individual car.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Start with the registration document, where the 17 characters are printed. On the car itself the VIN is often visible at the base of the windscreen or on a plate or stamping near the door frame. Compare what you find in each place.
NM4 is the WMI, the first three characters, that we map to Tofas, and it belongs to Turkey. It tells you who made the car and in which country. It does not say which model it is. That comes from the rest of the VIN.
Look at the tenth character. A letter such as T means 1996, and the digits 1 to 6 mean 2001 to 2006. Our version data for the brand runs from 1981 to 2006.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or the number of owners, because none of that is part of the VIN. It also does not give a car's condition or service record. The decoder only reads the structure of the 17 characters.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the documents, and that the tenth character fits the year the seller states. Then inspect the car in person and ask for the service records. Since the models we cover date from 1981 to 2006, expect age-related wear and judge the individual car.
