Enter a 17-character Tatra VIN and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from the code. Our data for the brand covers two models, the T613 and the T700, with model years from 1973 to 1999, and the body style on record is Sedan. The highest power figure in our data is 200 hp.
A VIN only holds this basic identification, so it says nothing about a car's past. Accidents, mileage, theft and previous owners come from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder itself is free and needs no registration.
The first three characters are the WMI, the world manufacturer identifier. The code we map to Tatra is TMT, and it belongs to the Czech Republic. If your VIN starts with TMT, the decoder will name the manufacturer and the country straight away. Our list of codes is not exhaustive, so a VIN that starts differently is simply one we do not recognise for this brand, and nothing more should be read into that.
Characters 4 to 8 form the descriptor section, and the 9th is the check digit. North American VINs must use it, but many European VINs fill that position differently, so do not worry if it looks arbitrary on a Czech-built car. Position 10 is the model year, position 11 the plant, and positions 12 to 17 the serial number. The letters I, O and Q are never used, which helps when you are reading a worn stamping.
The model year character is the easiest part to check by hand. A tenth character of K stands for 1989, L for 1990 and V for 1997, all inside the 1973 to 1999 range of our Tatra data. The 17-character format applies to cars built since 1981, so the letter system starts with B for 1981 and runs to X for 1999 within this range.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Check the vehicle registration papers first, since the VIN is printed there. On the car itself it is normally stamped on the body or chassis and often shown on a plate. Compare what you see with the documents character by character.
TMT is the WMI code we link to Tatra, and it points to the Czech Republic as the country of manufacture. These are the only codes we currently map to the brand, so a VIN with a different start is just not in our list.
Look at the 10th character. For example, K means 1989 and L means 1990. Our version data for the brand runs from 1973 to 1999, but the letter system only applies to 17-character VINs of cars built since 1981.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not give a car's condition or its equipment beyond what the code identifies.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the registration papers exactly, and decode it to confirm the model year and country fit the seller's description. Ask for service records and inspect the car in person, since a T613 or T700 sedan from these years is now of considerable age.
