Enter a 17-character VIN and the Tata decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture straight from the code. Our data covers 24 Tata models, from the 45X, Altroz and Aria to the Xenon and Zest, with model years from 1991 to 2024. Body styles in the data include Hatchback, Convertible, SUV, Estate, Sedan and Wagon, and the highest power figure we hold is 170 hp.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself, so it says nothing about a particular car's past. Accidents, mileage, theft records and previous owners are not stored in the number. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. The code we map to Tata is MAT, and it belongs to India. If your VIN begins with MAT, the decoder will report Tata as the manufacturer and India as the country of manufacture. Our list is not complete, so MAT is simply the code we recognise for the brand, and a VIN that starts differently is not a reason for concern.
Characters 4 to 8 make up the descriptor section, and character 9 is the check digit. That digit is required in North America, while many European VINs fill the position differently, so we do not treat it as a pass or fail test. Position 10 is the model year, and for Tata models in our data it runs from M for 1991 through K for 2019 and P for 2023 to R for 2024. Letters and digits never include I, O or Q.
Character 11 identifies the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number of the individual vehicle. VINs in this 17-character format exist for cars built since 1981, which is why the tenth character is the quickest way to place a Tata within the 1991 to 2024 range.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look for a plate at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, a sticker on a door pillar, and the vehicle registration papers. The number in the papers should match the one on the car exactly.
The first three characters are the WMI, and MAT is the code we recognise for Tata, assigned to India. The next characters describe the vehicle, and the later ones identify the model year, plant and serial number.
Check the tenth character. M stands for 1991, K for 2019 and P for 2023, and our Tata data ends with R for 2024. Note that the letters repeat over time, so M also stands for 2021, which is also within our range.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is part of the VIN. It only reads the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture from the code.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the registration papers and the advertisement, and see that the model year character fits the year given by the seller. Then inspect the car in person and ask for service records.
