Enter a 17-character VIN and the Spyker decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from it. Our data for the brand covers the C8, convertible bodies, and model years from 2000 to 2017. It is free and needs no registration.
A VIN carries no record of accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show any of that. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
Pick a Spyker model to see how its VIN works.
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. The code we map to Spyker is XL9, and it belongs to the Netherlands. When a VIN begins with XL9, the decoder reports Spyker as the manufacturer and the Netherlands as the country of manufacture. Our list of codes is not complete, so it only tells you which one we recognise for the brand.
Characters 4 to 8 are the descriptor section, which describes the vehicle itself. Character 9 is the check digit. North American VINs require it, while many European VINs fill that position differently, so do not read too much into it on a Spyker. The letters I, O and Q are never used anywhere in a VIN.
Character 10 gives the model year. Y stands for 2000, 8 for 2008 and H for 2017, which are the two ends and the middle of the range in our Spyker data. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number of the individual car.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the registration papers and at the VIN plate on the car itself. Check that the number on the car matches the one in the documents, character for character, before you enter it in the decoder.
XL9 is the World Manufacturer Identifier we link to Spyker, and it belongs to the Netherlands. It identifies the manufacturer and country only, not the model or the year. A VIN starting with other characters is not necessarily a problem, because our list of codes is not complete.
Read the 10th character. Y means 2000, 1 means 2001, 8 means 2008, A means 2010 and H means 2017. Our version data for the brand runs from 2000 to 2017.
It cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It reads only the 17 characters, which give the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture.
Make sure the VIN is the same on the car and in the papers, and that the decoded year and country fit the car you are being offered. Our data lists the C8 as a convertible, so compare that with the car in front of you. Then ask for the history that the VIN itself cannot give.
