This page decodes the 17-character VIN of a Sony. Enter it and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from the characters themselves. Our data for the brand lists two models, Vision-S 01 and Vision-S 02, with versions covering model years 2020 to 2022 in Sedan and SUV body styles.
The decoder reads only the VIN, so it cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder itself is free and needs no registration.

Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used, so they cannot be mistaken for 1 and 0. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We do not yet have any WMI codes on record for Sony, so there is no code or country of manufacture to list here. Our list is not complete, and that says nothing about any particular VIN.
Characters 4 to 8 are the descriptor section, which describes the vehicle itself. Character 9 is the check digit. It is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 is the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 the serial number.
The model year character is the easiest part to check against our data, which covers 2020 to 2022. For those years the letters are L for 2020, M for 2021 and N for 2022. A VIN with M in the tenth position points to model year 2021, for example.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

It is normally printed in the vehicle registration documents and marked on the car itself. The exact location differs between vehicles, so the owner's manual is the best guide. Make sure you copy all 17 characters.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes on record for Sony at the moment, so the decoder has no code to show for the brand. Our list is not complete.
Look at the tenth character of the VIN. Our version data covers 2020 to 2022, which correspond to the letters L, M and N.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. None of that is stored in the VIN, which only identifies the manufacturer, the vehicle and its serial number.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the registration papers, character by character. Then check that the model year the decoder reports matches the seller's description. Finally, ask for service records and have the car inspected in person.
