This free decoder reads the 17 characters of a Sono Motors VIN and shows what is encoded in them: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand currently covers one model, the Sion, with version data from model year 2023 to the present and Hatchback as the body style. No registration is needed.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show any of that. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. We do not yet have any WMI codes mapped to Sono Motors, so there is no code or country to quote for this brand. Our WMI list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem in itself.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North America requires it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 is the model year. For a Sono Motors in our 2023 to present range, P means 2023, R means 2024 and S means 2025. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the vehicle registration document first, where the full 17 characters are printed. On the car itself, the VIN is often visible at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side.
The first three characters are the WMI, which stands for manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Sono Motors at the moment, and our list is not complete, so the decoder may not link every VIN to the brand.
Read the tenth character of the VIN. Our version data starts at model year 2023, which is the letter P, followed by R for 2024 and S for 2025.
It reads only the VIN itself, so it cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or the number of owners. None of that is stored in the 17 characters.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the registration papers and make sure the characters match. Then check that the model year the decoder gives fits the seller's description, and ask to see service records.
