This page decodes the 17-character VIN of a SMA. Enter the VIN and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from the characters themselves. Our data for the brand covers 5 models, C32, C51, C52, C61 and C81, with model years from 2005 to 2016, and the body style we have on record is Sedan.
The decoder reads only the VIN, so it says nothing about a car's past, such as accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. We do not yet have any WMI codes on file for SMA, so there is no list of codes to show here and no country we can name for the brand.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is the check digit. North American VINs require it, while many European VINs fill it differently. Character 10 is the model year. For a SMA from our range, a 5 stands for 2005, an 8 for 2008, an A for 2010 and a G for 2016. Character 11 shows the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the vehicle registration document first, since the VIN is normally printed there. On the car itself it is usually on a plate or stamping, often at the base of the windscreen or on a door pillar.
The first three characters are the WMI, which names the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. We have no WMI codes mapped to SMA at the moment, so we cannot list any here.
Use the 10th character. In the years our data covers, 5 means 2005, 6 means 2006, 7 means 2007, 8 means 2008 and 9 means 2009. After that come A for 2010, B for 2011, C for 2012, D for 2013, E for 2014, F for 2015 and G for 2016.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because a VIN does not contain any of that. It only decodes the 17 characters.
Compare the VIN in the registration document with the one on the car, character by character. Make sure it has 17 characters and no I, O or Q. Then ask the seller for service records and proof of the mileage.
