Enter the 17-character VIN of a Scion and the decoder tells you who made the car, which model year the VIN points to, and in which country it was built. It is free and needs no registration. Our data for the brand covers eight models, among them the FR-S, iA, iM, iQ, tC, xA, xB and xD, with model years from 2003 to 2016.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself, so it says nothing about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
The first three characters are the WMI, the code for the manufacturer. For Scion we recognise 1TK, JF1, JTK, JTL and JTN. They belong to two countries, the United States and Japan, which is why a Scion VIN can begin with either the digit 1 or the letter J. If your VIN starts with something else, that only means it is not in our list, and the decoder will say so.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must carry a real check digit there, while many European ones use the position differently. Characters 12 to 17 are the serial number of the individual car.
The model year sits in position 10. A Scion built for the 2005 model year has a 5 there, a 2011 car has a B, a 2013 car a D and a 2016 car a G. Position 11 shows the plant. Letters I, O and Q never appear anywhere in a VIN, so a character that looks like one of them is a 1 or a 0.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |

A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the base of the windshield on the driver side, where the number is visible from outside, and on the sticker in the driver door jamb. It is also printed on the registration and insurance papers. Compare them, because all of them should show the same 17 characters.
The first three characters are the WMI. For Scion we map 1TK, JF1, JTK, JTL and JTN, which cover the United States and Japan. A different start does not make a VIN wrong, it just means we do not list that code for the brand.
Read the 10th character. Within the 2003 to 2016 range our data covers, 3 means 2003, 9 means 2009, A means 2010 and G means 2016. Digits run from 2001 to 2009 and letters take over from 2010.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not list equipment or condition of one particular car.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the documents, and that the model year character agrees with the year in the advert. Then inspect the car in person and ask for service records.
