This page decodes the 17-character VIN of a Saleen. Paste the VIN into the decoder and it reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from the characters themselves. Our data for the brand lists two models, 1 and S7, with model years from 2000 to 2020.
The decoder reads only the VIN. It does not know a car's accident record, mileage, theft status or past owners, because none of that is stored in the number. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is the check digit, character 10 is the model year, character 11 is the plant and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Saleen, so there is no list of starting characters to show here. If your VIN begins with something else, that says nothing about the car. Our list is simply not complete, and the decoder still works through the rest of the number using the general VIN rules.
The model year is the easiest part to check yourself. Our data for Saleen runs from 2000 to 2020. In that range a 2000 car carries the letter Y in position 10, a 2005 car carries the digit 5, and a 2020 car carries the letter L. Years from 2001 to 2009 use the digits 1 to 9, and 2010 onward goes back to letters, starting with A.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, on the sticker in the door jamb, and on the registration documents. Compare them, since all of them should show the same 17 characters.
The first three characters are the WMI, which points to the manufacturer and the country. We do not currently have any WMI codes mapped to Saleen, so we cannot list them here. A VIN that starts with other characters is not wrong because of that.
Read character 10. Within the years in our data, Y means 2000, the digits 1 to 9 mean 2001 to 2009, and letters from A onward mean 2010 and later, for example L for 2020. The decoder does this for you and shows the year directly.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of owners, because a VIN does not contain them. It also does not give body style or power figures for this brand, as we have no data on those.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the papers and has exactly 17 characters. Decode it to confirm the model year fits the car you are being offered, then inspect the car in person and ask for service records.
