Enter the 17-character VIN of a Rivian and the decoder reads what is built into the number itself: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand covers two models, the R1S and the R1T, with SUV as the body style and model years from 2021 to the present. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show any of that. If you need it, that information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. The code we map to Rivian is 7FC, and it belongs to the United States. So a VIN that begins with 7FC is read as a Rivian made in the United States. Our WMI list is not complete, and the code above is simply the one we recognise for the brand.
Characters 4 to 8 are the descriptor section, where the manufacturer encodes details about the vehicle. Position 9 is the check digit, which is required in North America. Position 10 is the model year, and for Rivian's range it runs M for 2021, N for 2022, P for 2023, R for 2024, S for 2025 and T for 2026. A VIN with 7FC at the start and M in the tenth place therefore points to model year 2021, the first year in our data.
Position 11 identifies the plant, and positions 12 to 17 are the serial number of the individual vehicle. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, so they cannot be misread as the digits 1 and 0.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Check the registration or title documents first, since the VIN is printed there. The same 17 characters are also marked on the vehicle itself, and the two should match exactly.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. We recognise 7FC for Rivian, and it belongs to the United States.
Look at the tenth character. For the years in our data, M is 2021, N is 2022, P is 2023, R is 2024, S is 2025 and T is 2026.
It reads only the VIN, so it gives the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accident damage, mileage, theft and the number of owners are not stored in the VIN.
Make sure the VIN on the vehicle matches the one in the sale documents, character for character. Then decode it here and see whether the model year and country agree with what the seller says about the R1S or R1T. Ask for service records and have the vehicle inspected in person.
