Enter the 17-character VIN of a Polestar and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from the code itself. Our data covers four models, Polestar 1, 2, 3 and 4, with model years from 2019 to the present, and the body style in our data is SUV. It is free and needs no registration.
The decoder reads only the VIN, so it cannot tell you anything about an individual car's past, such as accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used, so they cannot be mistaken for 1 and 0. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Polestar, so we cannot list any here. That does not make a VIN wrong. Our list is not complete, and the decoder will still read what it can from the rest of the code.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North America requires it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 gives the model year. For a Polestar from our range, K stands for 2019, L for 2020, M for 2021, N for 2022, P for 2023, R for 2024 and S for 2025. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

It is usually printed in the registration papers and on a plate or label on the car itself. Check that the number on the car matches the one in the documents before you enter it.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Polestar yet, so we list none. A VIN that the decoder cannot match is not a sign of a problem.
Look at the 10th character. In our model range, K is 2019, L is 2020, M is 2021, N is 2022, P is 2023, R is 2024 and S is 2025. The decoder reads this character for you.
It does not show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because a VIN does not contain them. It also cannot tell you the condition of a particular car.
Compare the VIN on the car with the VIN in the paperwork, and make sure the decoded model year fits what the seller tells you. Ask for service records and look over the car in person.
