Enter a 17-character Polaris VIN and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture straight from the characters. Our data for the brand covers one model, the Slingshot, with the Roadster body style and version data for model years 2014 to 2019.
The VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, and the decoder shows none of them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder stays free and needs no registration.

The first three characters of a VIN are the WMI, the code that identifies the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Polaris, so there is no list of prefixes to show you here. Our list is not complete, and a Polaris VIN may begin with characters we do not recognise yet.
The model year sits in position 10. For the years in our Polaris data the letters are E for 2014, F for 2015, G for 2016, H for 2017, J for 2018 and K for 2019. A Slingshot VIN with J in the tenth place, for example, points to model year 2018.
The rest follows the standard layout. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit (required in North America, while many European VINs fill it differently), character 11 marks the plant and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The letters I, O and Q are never used, which helps when you are unsure whether a character is a letter or a digit.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Start with the registration papers or the insurance documents, which normally print the full 17 characters. On the vehicle itself the VIN is normally on a plate or stamped into the body or frame, and it is worth checking that both numbers match.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Polaris yet, so a VIN that starts differently from anything you have seen is not a sign of a problem.
Look at the tenth character. In the range covered by our data, E means 2014, F 2015, G 2016, H 2017, J 2018 and K 2019. The decoder reads this for you and shows the year next to the other results.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or the number of owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also gives no power figure for Polaris, since we do not have one in our data.
Make sure the VIN on the documents matches the one on the vehicle and that it has 17 characters without I, O or Q. Then decode it and compare the model year with what the seller claims. Our data covers the Slingshot Roadster from 2014 to 2019.
