Enter a 17-character VIN and the decoder reads what is built into it: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. For Pininfarina, our data lists 3 models, for example Battista, H2 and HK GT, with version data for model years 2018 to 2019. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, which you can look at once you know the decoded basics match the car in front of you.
Every VIN for a car built since 1981 has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, the world manufacturer identifier, which tells you who built the vehicle and in which country. For Pininfarina we do not yet have any WMI codes mapped to the brand, so there is no list of starting characters to show here. Our WMI list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with characters we do not list is not a problem in itself.
Characters 4 to 8 form the descriptor section, and character 9 is the check digit. North America requires it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. The 10th character is the model year. In our version data for this brand, J stands for 2018 and K for 2019, so a Pininfarina VIN with J or K in tenth place would fit that range. The 11th character marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Start with the registration papers, where the VIN is printed in full. The number is also fixed to the car itself, but the exact spot differs between vehicles, so check the paperwork first and then compare it with the car.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Pininfarina at the moment, so we cannot list any here. That reflects the limits of our list, not a verdict on any particular VIN.
Look at the 10th character. Our version data covers 2018 to 2019, where J means 2018 and K means 2019. The decoder reads this character for you.
It reads only the VIN, so it shows manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or owners. Body style and power figures are not available in our data for this brand either.
Compare the VIN in the papers with the one on the car, character by character. Then check that the decoded model year and country fit the listing and the model you were told it is, such as Battista, H2 or HK GT. If something does not match, ask the seller before going further.
