Enter a 17-character VIN and the NIO decoder reads what is built into the number itself: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data lists 10 NIO models, among them the EC6, EC7, EL7, EL8, EP9, ES6, ES7, ES8, ET5 and ET7, and the version data covers model years from 2016 to the present. The body styles in our data are SUV, Sedan and Wagon.
The decoder does not show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, because none of that is stored in a VIN. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder itself stays free and needs no registration.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to NIO, so we cannot list any here or name a country of manufacture for the brand. The codes we recognise can grow over time, and a VIN that begins with other characters is not a problem in itself.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North America requires it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 gives the model year. For a NIO within our data range, a G means 2016, a K means 2019, an N means 2022 and an S means 2025. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the vehicle registration papers first, since the full 17 characters are normally printed there. On the car, the VIN is usually visible at the base of the windscreen or on a label at the door frame. Compare the two and copy it without spaces.
The first three characters are the WMI, which points to the manufacturer and the country. We have no WMI codes mapped to NIO yet, so the decoder may not name a manufacturer or country from our list for these VINs.
Use the tenth character. G stands for 2016, J for 2018, M for 2021, P for 2023 and S for 2025. Our version data for NIO starts at 2016, which is the G position.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft status or the number of owners, because a VIN does not contain them. It also does not give the highest power for NIO, as we have no figure in our data.
Make sure the VIN on the documents matches the number on the car, and that the model year from the tenth character fits the car as advertised. Then ask the seller for service records and have the car inspected in person.
