Enter a 17-character VIN and the Morgan decoder reads the manufacturer code, the model year and the country of manufacture straight from the characters. Our data covers 9 Morgan models, among them the 3 Wheeler, 4/4, Aero 8, Plus 4, Plus 8, Plus Four, Plus Six, Roadster and Super 3, with model years from 1968 to 2022. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
It reads the VIN and nothing more, so it cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. It names the maker and the country of manufacture. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Morgan, so we cannot list any here. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that begins with other characters is not a problem for that reason.
Characters 4 to 8 are the descriptor section, which manufacturers use to describe the vehicle. Character 9 is the check digit. North American VINs are required to have one, while many European VINs fill that position differently. The tenth character gives the model year. On a Morgan from our data range it might be 8 for 2008, L for 2020 or N for 2022. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN.
Character 11 marks the plant and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The 17-character format applies to cars built since 1981. The model years in our data start in 1968, so for the earliest cars the number may not follow this layout, and the decoder is aimed at the 17-character form. Our data lists Roadster and Convertible body styles and a highest power of 223 hp.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look for the identification plate on the car itself and for the number in the registration papers. Check that the two match, and read all 17 characters carefully, since I, O and Q never appear.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. We have no WMI codes mapped to Morgan at the moment, so we cannot list any. The remaining characters can still be read as described on this page.
Look at the tenth character. A letter or digit stands for a year, for example 8 for 2008, L for 2020 and N for 2022. Our version data for Morgan covers 1968 to 2022, and this rule applies to cars built since 1981.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. The decoder only reads the characters of the number.
Compare the VIN on the car with the number in the registration papers, and check that the model year character fits the year given in the advert. Then look at the car in person, and ask the seller for service records and for the history behind the mileage.
