Enter a 17-character VIN and the HistoVIN decoder reads what is written into the code itself: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. For Monte Carlo our data holds one model, also called Monte Carlo, with version data for model years 1992 to 1995.
The decoder is free and needs no registration. It does not show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, because a VIN does not contain them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

A VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. For Monte Carlo we have no WMI codes mapped yet, so there is no code to quote here and no country of manufacture to list. Our WMI list is not complete, and that says nothing about any particular VIN.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is the check digit. North American VINs require it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 is the model year, 11 is the plant, and 12 to 17 are the serial number.
The tenth character is the easiest to use for a Monte Carlo. Our version data covers 1992 to 1995, which correspond to the letters N for 1992, P for 1993, R for 1994 and S for 1995. A VIN with R in position 10, for instance, points to model year 1994.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the registration papers first, then check the car itself. VINs are commonly stamped or printed on the body near the windscreen or on a label at the door. Every car built since 1981 should carry a 17-character VIN.
The first three characters are the WMI, which names the manufacturer. We do not yet have any WMI codes mapped to Monte Carlo, so the decoder may not link a VIN to the brand by its start. The codes we list are simply the ones we recognise.
Read the tenth character. In our data for this brand, N means 1992, P means 1993, R means 1994 and S means 1995.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or the number of owners. It also cannot give body style or engine power for Monte Carlo, as we have no such data for this brand.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the registration documents, character by character. Ask the seller for service records and look over the car in person. The decoder only confirms what the VIN itself encodes.
