Enter a 17-character VIN and the Melkus decoder reads what the number itself holds: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our version data for the brand covers one model, the RS2000, with model years from 2009 to 2012. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
It does not show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, because none of that is stored in a VIN. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

The first three characters of a VIN are the WMI, the code that identifies the manufacturer and the country. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Melkus, so there is no list of codes to show here and no country to tie to them. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts with other characters is not a cause for concern.
The tenth character gives the model year, and this is the easiest part to check against our data. For the years we cover, the characters are 9 for 2009, A for 2010, B for 2011 and C for 2012. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, and the year letters are reused in later cycles, so the character is best read together with what you know about the car.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must have a valid check digit, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number of the individual car.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |

Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

The VIN is printed in the vehicle's registration papers and is also stamped or fixed on the car itself. Check that both show the same 17 characters before you enter them in the decoder.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Melkus yet, and our list is not complete, so a VIN starting with other characters can still be entered.
Look at the tenth character of the VIN. Within the 2009 to 2012 range of our data, 9 means 2009, A means 2010, B means 2011 and C means 2012.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records, number of owners or service history. A VIN is only an identifier of the car and does not contain any of that.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the registration papers, and see whether the tenth character fits the model year stated in the advert. Ask for service records and inspect the car in person, since the VIN alone says nothing about its condition or past.
