Enter a 17-character McLaren VIN and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture straight from the code. Our data covers 21 McLaren models, from the F1 and MP4-12C to the 720S, Artura and W1, with model years from 1992 to the present. Body styles in our data are Coupe, Convertible and Roadster.
The decoder is free and needs no registration, but it reads only the VIN itself. Accidents, mileage, theft records and previous owners are not stored in the number, and that information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. The code we map to McLaren is SBM, and it belongs to the United Kingdom. A VIN that begins with SBM will therefore be decoded as a McLaren built in the UK. Our WMI list is not complete, so a VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem in itself. SBM is simply the code we recognise for the brand.
Characters 4 to 8 are the descriptor section, where the maker encodes details of the vehicle. Character 9 is the check digit. It is required in North America, while many European VINs fill it in differently, so it is not a reliable test on its own. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, which helps when you copy one down by hand.
The tenth character gives the model year. For a McLaren, R means 2024, S means 2025 and T means 2026, while N stands for 1992, the earliest year in our version data. The same letter can come back after a 30-year cycle, so N may also mean 2022. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number of that particular car.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the registration document first, since the VIN is printed there. On the car itself it is normally shown on a plate or label, often near the base of the windscreen or around the door area. Check that the number on the car matches the paperwork character by character.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. The code we recognise for McLaren is SBM, which belongs to the United Kingdom. Characters 4 to 8 then describe the vehicle, and the rest of the VIN narrows it down to one car.
Use the tenth character. A letter R means 2024, S means 2025 and T means 2026, and a 1992 car carries N. Remember that letters repeat every 30 years, so N can also stand for 2022.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft status or how many owners a car has had, because none of that is part of the VIN. It also does not confirm the condition of a particular car. It reads the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture, nothing more.
Make sure the VIN on the car, in the registration document and in the sales paperwork is identical. Decode it to see whether the model year and country match what the seller says. Then ask for the service records and inspect the car in person.
