Enter a 17-character VIN and the HistoVIN decoder reads what is encoded in it: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. For Maruti, our version data covers model years 1985 to 2019 and 11 models, among them 1000, 800, Alto, Baleno, Esteem, Gypsy, Nexa, Omni, Versa, Wagon R and Zen.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself, so it cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder stays free and needs no registration.
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. It points to the manufacturer and the country where the vehicle was built. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Maruti, so there are no codes to list here. That only reflects the limits of our list, which is not complete, and a VIN starting with any characters can still be decoded.
The tenth character is the model year. Our Maruti data starts at 1985, which is an F in that position, and runs to 2019, which is a K. The letters repeat on a long cycle, so an F can mean 1985 or 2015, and both fall inside our range. Other examples are Y for 2000 and 1 for 2001.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North America requires it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 11 usually marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The letters I, O and Q are never used, which helps when you are copying a VIN from a worn plate.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

It is usually on a plate at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, on a sticker in the door frame, and in the registration papers. Compare these places, because they should all show the same 17 characters.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Maruti yet, so the decoder may not place the manufacturer from those characters alone. That does not mean your VIN is wrong.
Look at the tenth character. For example, F stands for 1985 and K for 2019, and the decoder does this translation for you. Our Maruti version data covers 1985 to 2019.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not tell you the condition of a particular car.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the documents and has exactly 17 characters. Then check that the model year character fits what the seller claims, and ask to see service records and inspect the car in person.
