Enter a 17-character VIN and the decoder tells you the manufacturer, the model year and the country where the vehicle was built. It is free and needs no registration. Our Mahindra data covers 33 models, from the Bolero, Scorpio and Thar to the XUV500, XUV700 and Xylo, in SUV, Wagon, Sedan and Convertible body styles.
The VIN itself does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. For Mahindra the code we recognise is MA1, and it belongs to India. So a VIN that begins with MA1 is read as a Mahindra built in India. Our list of codes is not complete, so a VIN that starts differently is simply one we do not map to the brand.
Characters 4 to 8 form the descriptor section, where the maker encodes details about the vehicle type. Character 9 is the check digit. It is required in North America, while many European VINs fill it differently. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, which avoids confusion with the digits 1 and 0.
Character 10 gives the model year. An N there means 2022, a P means 2023 and an R means 2024. Character 11 identifies the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number of the individual vehicle. Our version data for Mahindra reaches back to 1922, but the standard 17-character VIN applies to vehicles built since 1981.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |

It is usually stamped on a plate or on the body near the base of the windscreen or on a door pillar, and it is printed on the registration papers. Compare the number on the vehicle with the one in the documents, character by character.
MA1 is the World Manufacturer Identifier we map to Mahindra, and it belongs to India. It tells you who built the vehicle and in which country, not which model it is.
Look at the 10th character. For example, N stands for 2022, P for 2023 and R for 2024. Keep in mind that the letters repeat after 30 years, so the same letter can point to two different decades.
It reads only the VIN, so it gives the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft and owners are not stored in a VIN at all.
Make sure the VIN on the vehicle matches the one in the papers and that the 10th character fits the model year the seller states. Then ask for service records and have the vehicle inspected, since the VIN alone says nothing about its condition.
