Enter the 17-character VIN of a Lucid and the decoder reads what is encoded in the number itself: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data lists two models for the brand, for example Air and Gravity, with version data covering model years 2021 to 2023 and the body style Sedan.
The decoder is free and needs no registration, but it reads only the VIN. It cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the number. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
The first three characters of a VIN are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. The WMI code we map to Lucid is 5LA, and it belongs to the United States. The codes listed here are the ones we recognise for the brand, and our list may not cover every case.
Characters 4 to 8 form the descriptor section, where the manufacturer encodes details about the vehicle. Character 9 is the check digit. It is required in North America, so on a US-built car it is part of the number's built-in check. Characters 12 to 17 are the serial number, and character 11 shows the plant.
The model year sits at position 10. For the years in our Lucid version data, the letters are M for 2021, N for 2022 and P for 2023. A VIN with 5LA at the start and an N in tenth place would therefore point to model year 2022. Remember that a VIN never uses the letters I, O or Q, so they cannot be mistaken for 1 and 0.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

The VIN is usually printed on a plate at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, and often on a label at the door pillar. It also appears in the registration and insurance documents.
5LA is the WMI code we map to Lucid, and it belongs to the United States. It tells you who built the car and in which country, nothing more.
Look at the tenth character. In our version data, M means 2021, N means 2022 and P means 2023.
It does not show accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of owners. A VIN holds only manufacturer, model year, plant and serial information.
Compare the VIN on the car with the one in the sale documents and make sure they match exactly. Then ask the seller for service records and look into the car's past, since the VIN alone says nothing about it.
