This page decodes the 17-character VIN of a LUAZ. Enter the VIN and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture straight from the characters. Our data for the brand currently lists one model, the 969, with version data covering model years 1979 to 1990.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself, so it does not show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder is free and needs no registration.

A modern VIN has 17 characters and never uses the letters I, O or Q. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit, character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
For LUAZ we have no WMI codes mapped yet, and so no country of manufacture to show. Our WMI list is not complete, so this says nothing about any particular VIN. The decoder still reads the model year and the structure of the number.
The tenth character is the one that matters most for a LUAZ in our data. Within the years 1979 to 1990, a B stands for 1981, G for 1986 and L for 1990. The 17-character system applies to vehicles built since 1981, so a LUAZ from 1979 or 1980 may carry a number in a different format.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Start with the registration papers, where the VIN is normally printed. Then compare it with the number on the vehicle itself. The position of the plate or stamping can differ from one vehicle to another, so check the whole vehicle rather than a single spot.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer. We have no WMI codes mapped to LUAZ at the moment, and our list is not complete. A VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem for that reason.
Look at the tenth character. For example, G means 1986 and L means 1990, both inside the 1979 to 1990 range of our version data. Vehicles built before 1981 may not follow this system.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also gives no body style or power figures for LUAZ, since we have no such data for the brand.
Make sure the VIN in the papers matches the number on the vehicle, and that the model year letter fits the age the seller claims. Ask for service records and inspect the vehicle in person. Remember that a decoded VIN confirms identity details only, not condition.
