Enter a 17-character VIN and the Lancia decoder reads what is built into the code itself: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our Lancia data covers 20 models, from Beta, Delta and Fulvia to Thema, Thesis and Ypsilon, with model years from 1968 to 2024. The body styles in it are sedan, coupe, wagon, convertible and hatchback, and the highest power figure is 286 hp.
A VIN does not carry accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder itself is free and needs no registration.
The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. For Lancia we map the code ZLA, and it belongs to Italy. So a VIN that starts with ZLA is read as a Lancia built in Italy. Our list of codes is not complete, so a VIN that starts differently is simply one we may not recognise yet.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is the check digit. North America requires a real check digit, but many European VINs fill that position differently, so do not read much into it on a Lancia. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, which helps when a handwritten or worn number looks unclear.
Character 10 is the model year. R stands for 2024, the last year in our Lancia data, and 1 stands for 2001. Character 11 is the assembly plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The 17-character system applies to cars built since 1981, even though our version data starts in 1968.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look for the 17-character number on the car itself, often at the base of the windscreen or on a plate in the door area, and on the registration papers. Compare the two, because they should match.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. We map ZLA to Lancia, and it belongs to Italy.
Look at the 10th character. R means 2024 and A means 2010, for example. Letters repeat after 30 years, so check the model against the year the car was actually built.
It reads only the VIN, so it cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. Those are not stored in the number.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the documents, and decode it to see that the manufacturer and model year agree with the advert. Then ask for service records and have the car inspected in person.
