What is a Lada VIN decoder?

This Lada VIN decoder reads the 17 characters of a VIN and shows the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data covers 30 Lada models, from the 1111 Oka and the 2101 through to the Granta, Vesta and XRAY, with model years running from 1970 to the present. The decoder is free and needs no registration.

A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

What the Lada decoder shows

  • The manufacturer and brand (Lada)
  • The model year
  • The country of manufacture
  • The assembly plant, when it is coded
  • The vehicle type and body style, where the manufacturer encodes it
  • Engine and model details, where available
  • Whether the VIN structure and check digit are valid

How to read the VIN of a Lada

The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI. The code we map to Lada is XTA, and it belongs to Russia. A VIN that begins with XTA is therefore decoded as a Lada built in Russia. Our list of codes is not complete, so it only shows the ones we recognise for the brand. A VIN that starts differently is simply not covered by it.

The tenth character gives the model year. A J stands for 2018, a K for 2019 and an L for 2020. The letters repeat every thirty years, so a B can mean 1981 or 2011. The body style, the documents and the age of the car usually settle which one is meant. The letters I, O and Q are never used in a VIN, so they cannot appear anywhere in the 17 characters. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, the eleventh marks the plant and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.

The ninth character is a check digit. North America requires it, but many European VINs fill that position differently, so do not treat it as a test of a Lada VIN. Our version data starts in 1970, while the 17-character format applies to cars built since 1981. For the earliest years there may be no 17-character VIN to enter.

How a VIN is built

Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.

Learn more about VINs

A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Before you buy a used Lada

  • Compare the VIN on the dashboard, the door frame and the documents. All three should match.
  • Look for signs of tampering around the VIN plate and the door frame sticker.
  • Ask for the service history and check it against the car.
  • Run a full history report to see recorded damage, mileage and theft records.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the VIN on a Lada?

Look at the vehicle registration document first, then compare it with the number on the car itself. It is usually stamped on the body and often visible at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side.

What does XTA at the start of a VIN mean?

XTA is the WMI we map to Lada, and it belongs to Russia. It tells you who built the car and in which country, not which model or trim it is.

How do I find the model year of a Lada from its VIN?

Check the tenth character. For example, J means 2018 and K means 2019. Because the letters repeat every thirty years, a B could be 1981 or 2011, so check it against the car itself.

What can the Lada decoder not show?

It shows the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture, nothing more. Accidents, mileage, theft and previous owners are not stored in the VIN.

What should I check before buying a used Lada?

Make sure the VIN in the documents matches the one on the car and that it has 17 characters without I, O or Q. Then see whether the model year character fits the year the seller states. Our data includes hatchback, sedan, wagon, SUV and roadster body styles, so the body should also fit the model you are being offered.
