Enter a 17-character VIN and the Karma decoder reads what is encoded in it: the manufacturer, the model year and, where our data allows, the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand is small. It lists one model, the Revero, as a sedan, with model years from 2016 to 2019 and a highest power figure of 235 hp.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself, so it cannot show accident damage, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report. The decoder is free and needs no registration.

Every VIN from a car built since 1981 has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Karma, so we cannot name a country of manufacture for the brand. The codes we recognise for a brand are only those on our list, and that list is not complete.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is the check digit. North American VINs require it, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Characters 12 to 17 are the serial number, and character 11 marks the plant.
The model year is the easiest part to check. It sits in position 10. For the 2016 to 2019 range in our Karma data, the letters are G for 2016, H for 2017, J for 2018 and K for 2019. A Revero VIN with a K in the tenth place points to model year 2019.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

The VIN is normally printed on the registration document and on a plate at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side. It is often repeated on the door pillar label. Compare the number on the car with the one in the papers before you enter it here.
The first three characters are the WMI, which stands for manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Karma at the moment, so the decoder may not name a country for every VIN. That does not say anything about whether a VIN is correct.
Look at the tenth character. In the range covered by our data, G means 2016, H means 2017, J means 2018 and K means 2019.
It cannot tell you about accidents, mileage, theft or how many owners a car has had. None of that is stored in the VIN. The decoder only translates the characters of the number.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one on the registration papers, and that the model year from character 10 fits the car and the seller's description. Then have the car inspected in person and ask the seller for service records.
