This page decodes the 17-character VIN of an Izh. Enter the number and the decoder reads the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture from the characters themselves. Our data for the brand lists 4 models, for example 2125, 2126, 21261 and 412, with version data from 1967 to 2005, in Hatchback, Wagon and Sedan body styles. The highest power in that data is 99 hp.
The decoder is free and needs no registration, but it reads only the VIN. It does not know about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, because none of that is stored in the number. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
A VIN has 17 characters and never uses the letters I, O or Q. The first three are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit, character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. The 17-character format applies to cars built since 1981.
For Izh we currently have no WMI codes on file, so there is no code to point to here and no country to name from the first three characters. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that starts differently is not a problem because of that. We only list the codes we recognise.
The model year is the easiest part to check by hand. Within the years we cover, the tenth character L stands for 1990, and a 5 stands for 2005. The check digit in position 9 is required in North America, while many European VINs fill it differently, so do not read too much into it on its own.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |

Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the registration papers first, then at the car itself, where the number is marked on the vehicle. Copy all 17 characters exactly and remember that I, O and Q are never used.
The first three characters are the WMI, which points to the manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes on file for Izh at the moment, so we cannot list any here.
Read the tenth character. For example, L means 1990 and 5 means 2005. Our version data for the brand runs from 1967 to 2005, and the 17-character system covers cars built since 1981.
It does not show accidents, mileage, theft or owners. A VIN only identifies the vehicle and does not record what happened to it.
Compare the VIN in the papers with the number on the car, and make sure the model year character fits the year you were told. Then check that the model, such as 2125, 2126, 21261 or 412, and the body style match the description of the car.
