Enter a 17-character VIN and the Italdesign decoder reads what is built into the number itself: the manufacturer code, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand is small. It lists two models, Da Vinci and Zerouno, and the version data we hold covers model year 2017 only.
A VIN does not record accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder here stays free and needs no registration.
Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country. Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, character 9 is a check digit, character 10 gives the model year, character 11 the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
We do not currently have a WMI code mapped to Italdesign, so we cannot name a first-three-character prefix to look for, and we have no country to attach to the brand. That reflects the limits of our list, not a problem with any particular VIN. The decoder still reads the 17 characters you enter.
The model year character is easier to illustrate. Our version data for the brand covers 2017, and in a VIN that year is written as the letter H in position 10. The check digit in position 9 is required in North America, while many European VINs fill that position differently, so do not judge a VIN by it.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.
Enter the 17-character VIN and see the factory basics in seconds.
Start with the vehicle registration documents, where the VIN is normally printed in full. The number is also fixed to the vehicle itself, but the exact place varies, so check the vehicle's own paperwork if you cannot find it.
The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and country. We have no WMI codes mapped to Italdesign at the moment, so we cannot list the ones to expect. A VIN that starts with other characters is not wrong because of that.
Look at the 10th character. For model year 2017, the only year in our Italdesign version data, that character is the letter H. Other years use other letters or digits, and the letters I, O and Q never appear.
It reads only the VIN, so it cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. None of that is stored in the number.
Compare the VIN on the vehicle with the VIN in the registration documents and make sure they match exactly. Then decode it here to see whether the model year and country of manufacture fit what the seller tells you.
