Enter the 17-character VIN of an Irmscher and the decoder shows the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. It is free and needs no registration. Our data for the brand covers four models, Coupe, GT, Omega Caravan and Senator, with model years from 1988 to 1997 and the body styles Coupe, Wagon and Sedan.
A VIN does not contain accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.

Every VIN of a car built since 1981 has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, the manufacturer code. For Irmscher, the code we map is WJR, and it belongs to Germany. These are the codes we recognise for the brand, so a VIN that starts differently is simply not covered by our list.
The tenth character is the model year. Within the range of our Irmscher data, 1988 to 1997, the letters run J for 1988, K for 1989, L for 1990, M for 1991, N for 1992, P for 1993, R for 1994, S for 1995, T for 1996 and V for 1997. A VIN with J in tenth position therefore points to 1988, one with V to 1997. The eleventh character stands for the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North America requires it, while many European VINs fill that position differently, so it is not a reliable test on its own for a German car.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side, on a sticker or plate in the door frame, and in the registration papers. Compare these places, the number should be the same everywhere.
WJR is the WMI code we map to Irmscher, and it belongs to Germany. Our list of codes is not complete, so a VIN with other first characters is not a sign of a problem.
Read the tenth character. For the years in our data it is J for 1988, K for 1989, L for 1990, M for 1991, N for 1992, P for 1993, R for 1994, S for 1995, T for 1996 and V for 1997.
It reads only the VIN, so it gives the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft and owners are not stored in the number.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the papers, and that the tenth character fits the model year stated in the advert. Then ask for service records and have the car looked at in person.
