Enter a 17-character VIN and the decoder reads what is encoded in it: the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for Innocenti covers four models (Elba, Mille, Mini and Small), model years 1974 to 1997, and the Wagon and Hatchback body styles, with 76 hp as the highest power figure we hold.
The decoder reads only the VIN itself, so it says nothing about accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report.
A modern VIN has 17 characters and never uses the letters I, O or Q. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the country of manufacture. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to Innocenti, so there is no list of prefixes to show here. The decoder still reads the characters you enter, and we will add codes as our data grows.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must use it as a check digit, while many European VINs fill that position differently, so a check digit that does not calculate is not a reason for concern on its own. Characters 12 to 17 are the serial number, and character 11 points to the assembly plant.
The model year sits in position 10. For cars in the Innocenti range that is a letter, for example G for 1986 or K for 1989. The 17-character format applies to cars built since 1981, so an Innocenti from 1974 to 1980 may not carry a VIN that the decoder can read in this way.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |

Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

On most cars it is stamped on a plate or panel near the base of the windscreen or on a door pillar, and it is also printed on the registration papers. On an older car the position can vary, so check the papers first and then look for the matching number on the car.
The first three characters are the WMI, which tells you the manufacturer and the country where the car was made. We have no WMI codes on record for Innocenti yet, so we cannot list any here. A VIN that starts with other characters is not a problem, since our list is simply not complete.
Look at the 10th character. For a car in the 1981 to 1997 range, B is 1981, G is 1986, K is 1989 and V is 1997. Our version data runs from 1974 to 1997, but cars before 1981 predate the 17-character format.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft records or the number of owners, because none of that is stored in the VIN. It also does not tell you the condition of a particular car.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the registration papers, and decode it to see whether the model year fits the seller's description. Then inspect the car in person and ask for service records, as a decoded VIN only confirms basic identity.
