Enter a 17-character VIN and the Infiniti decoder tells you who made the car, which model year it belongs to and in which country it was built. Our data covers 22 Infiniti models, from the older I30, I35, J30 and Q45 to the QX50, QX55, QX60 and QX80, across SUV, sedan, coupe, convertible and hatchback body styles. The decoder is free and needs no registration.
A VIN does not record accidents, mileage, theft or previous owners, so the decoder cannot show them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, which you can look at once you know the basics of the car are right.
The first three characters are the WMI, the world manufacturer identifier. For Infiniti we recognise two of them, JNK and JNR, and both belong to Japan in our data. If your VIN starts with one of these, the decoder will name the manufacturer and the country of manufacture straight away. Our list of codes is not complete, so a VIN that begins differently is not a reason for concern.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is the check digit. North American VINs must have a valid check digit, while many European ones fill that position differently. The tenth character gives the model year. For example, N means 2022, P means 2023 and L means 2020. Character 11 marks the plant, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number.
Letters I, O and Q never appear in a VIN, which is a small curiosity for a brand with so many Q models such as the Q30, Q50 and Q60. The 17-character format applies to cars built since 1981. Our version data reaches back to 1979 and runs to the present, since some models are still being built.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |
On the driver's side, visible through the windshield.
On a sticker on the door frame or the edge of the door.
Printed in the vehicle registration or title.
Stamped on the firewall or the frame on many models.
A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

Look for the 17-character code on the plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side, or on a sticker in the driver's door frame. It is also printed in the registration papers, so you can compare the car with its documents.
They are the WMI codes we map to Infiniti, and both point to Japan as the country of manufacture. They are the codes we recognise for the brand, not a complete list.
Read the tenth character. A letter or digit stands for one year, so N is 2022, P is 2023 and L is 2020, while digits cover 2001 to 2009. The decoder does this for you and shows the year directly.
It reads only the VIN, so it shows the manufacturer, model year and country of manufacture. Accidents, mileage, theft and owners are not stored in the VIN.
Make sure the VIN on the car, in the windshield plate and the door frame, matches the registration papers. Then decode it and compare the model year and country with the listing. Ask the seller for service records and inspect the car in person.
