The ICKX decoder reads the 17 characters of a VIN and shows the manufacturer, the model year and the country of manufacture. Our data for the brand is small: one model, the K2, with version data for model year 2022.
The decoder does not show accidents, mileage, theft records or previous owners, because a VIN does not contain them. That information comes from a paid vehicle history report, while the decoder itself is free and needs no registration.

Every VIN has 17 characters, and the letters I, O and Q are never used. The first three characters are the WMI, which identifies the manufacturer and the region. At the moment we have no WMI codes mapped to ICKX, so we cannot name a prefix or a country of manufacture for the brand. Our list is not complete, and a VIN that begins with other characters is not a problem in itself.
Characters 4 to 8 describe the vehicle, and character 9 is a check digit. North American VINs must use it as a check digit, while many European VINs fill that position differently. Character 10 gives the model year. For the K2 in our data the year is 2022, which is the letter N in that position.
Character 11 usually points to the plant where the car was built, and characters 12 to 17 are the serial number. These last six characters separate one car from another within the same model and year.
Every VIN has six parts. This is what each of them means.
| Part | Characters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| WMI | 1 to 3 | World manufacturer identifier: who built the vehicle and where |
| VDS | 4 to 8 | Vehicle descriptor: model, body type and engine, as set by the manufacturer |
| Check digit | 9 | Control value that helps confirm the VIN is valid |
| Model year | 10 | Code for the model year |
| Plant | 11 | Code for the assembly plant |
| Serial | 12 to 17 | Production sequence number of this vehicle |

A VIN is built from six parts, and each one says something about the vehicle. Our guides explain how to read it and what it can and cannot tell you.

On most cars the VIN is printed on a plate at the base of the windscreen on the driver side and on a label in the door frame. It is also written in the registration documents, so you can compare all three.
The first three characters are the WMI, which names the manufacturer and region. We do not yet have any WMI codes mapped to ICKX, so the decoder may not link a VIN to the brand through those characters.
Look at the 10th character of the VIN. Our version data for the K2 covers model year 2022, and that year is shown by the letter N.
It cannot show accidents, mileage, theft or owners, since none of that is stored in a VIN. It reads only the characters themselves.
Make sure the VIN on the car matches the one in the documents, and that the 10th character fits the year the seller gives. Then ask for service records and look at the car in person.
